Salone del Gusto 2004
This biennial exhibition of Regional and artisanal produced food, organised by Slowfood Italy was held in Turin from the 21st to 25th of October. The exhibition dovetailed with the remarkable Terra Madre Event which commenced on the 20th of October and ran until the morning of the 23rd.
This event brought 5000 farmers and producers from across the globe to discuss and listen to issues relevant to smaller productions.
The Irish Raw Cows Milk Cheese Presidia exhibited at Salone, this year we represented six producers,
Bellingham Blue, Cooleeney, Desmond, Durrus, Drumlin, and Mt Callan.
It was five busy days, hundreds of people bought tasting plates of the cheeses and there was a very positive reaction to the selection of cheese.
Sarah Bates kept the stall going, with stalwart help from Silke and Felix Cropp, Kevin Sheridan, Jeffa Gill and other affiliates who strayed our way with an hour or two to spare!
Along with the Irish Presidia Stand there was the English Cheddar Presidia, and also the American Farmstead Cheese Presidia among many more from as far away as Tibet.
There was a workshop on Irish raw Milk Cheeses on the Sunday evening where we tasted all the above and more, paired with wines kindly sponsored by Febvre, assisted by Monica Murphy who joined with Seamus Sheridan and Jeffa Gill, to describe a little about the productions of these cheeses in Ireland.
We also had an official master of food who described in eloquent terms the flavours he encountered during the tasting.
It was a good experience to see the reaction from others, that Ireland is producing cheeses of taste and quality.
