Winners of the 'Shiela Broderick Memorial' - National Farmhouse Cheese Competition, Listowel, November 9th 2007

Supreme Champion: Siobhn Ni Gairbhith, St. Tola Log, Inagh Farmhouse Cheese. Co. Clare

At the fifth edition of the Sheila Broderick Memorial, the St. Tola goat's log from Inagh Farmhouse Cheese in Co. Clare was elected as the best Irish Farmhouse Cheese of 2007. Siobhan Ní Ghairbhith received the trophy from judge and cheese guru Juliet Harbutt. The award for the best new cheese went to Helen Finnegan of Knockdrinna Farmhouse Cheese from Kilkenny.

The fifth edition of the Irish Farmhouse Cheese competition was held at the Listowel food Fair last Friday. The national competition is held in memory of Kerry cheese maker Sheila Broderick, in conjunction with CAIS, the Irish Farmhouse Cheesemakers Association. All farmhouse cheese makers in Ireland were asked to send in their cheeses.

This year, cheese guru Juliet Harbutt was asked to judge the cheeses that were send in. UK based Harbutt is well known in the cheese world as a consultant, retailer and writer. She is the founder of the British Cheese Awards, and runs the website 'the cheeseweb'.

Winners
There were six different categories. Four classes were dedicated to cow's milk cheese. The award for the best hard cow's milk cheese went to Offaly-based Ralph Haslam with Mossfield Organic Farm cheese with cumin; the best soft cheese of cows milk was made by Mary Kelly of Moonshine Dairy in Co. Westmeath; Quinlan Steele of Milleens in Co. Cork won in the class semi-soft or washed rind cheese. Wicklow Blue, made by John Hempenstall in Arklow was elected as the best blue cheese of cow's milk.

Two classes were reserved for goat's and sheep's milk cheeses. Marion Roeleveld from Co. Galway won the award for the best hard cheese with her Killeen Farmhouse Goat's Cheese. The best soft cheese of goat's and sheep's milk was made by Inagh Farmhouse Cheese from Co. Clare. Their St. Tola log was also elected as the supreme winner of the competition. Another entry in this class, Knockdrinna cheese from Co. Kilkenny made by Helen Finnegan, received the award for the best new cheese.
